10 Proven Steelhead Fly Fishing Tips and the Wet Fly Swing

steelhead fly fishing

fishing tips

This was originally published on May 12, 2015 and was update on Feb 21, 2022.

There’s something about the repetition of waiting for that first tug on the fly line. Of the power of that pull and excitement of trying not to lose a downstream screaming fish.  It’s like being on a skateboard, tied to your friend’s bike and he’s going as fast as possible.  You are a little too afraid to touch anything or jump off, worried that it might result in a huge wipeout.

The blood is pumping, as the fish goes into the backing, and you struggle to get closer to shore so you can follow the fish and run if needed.

Are there any steelhead fly fishing tips to assure that I land this fish?

You finally slow the fish down and begin to make some ground. After 10 minutes, you have the huge steelhead within viewing distance below you.   As you bring it up closer, it makes one last surprise run and spits the fly.

Fly Fishing Norway Top 9 Tips

  1. It’s important to get a little bit of back weight on your rod
  2. Start with water load – put the nymph’s downstream of you and have that tension then bring them upstream
  3. Cast 6 or 7 meters max for a start and get comfortable with it before going longer
  4. Look for some kind of variation – a structure on the bottom that’s breaking the current – that’s where you’ll usually find the fish
  5. The fly pattern is never the most important – the important thing is how you bring the fly to the fish
  6. Have at least 1 dark, 1 light, and 1 attraction nymph in different sizes, beads, and weight
  7. When casting upstream, never let the line land on water – only the fly, and keep that indicator (siders) close to the surface
  8. Keep in contact with the fly without dragging too much
  9. To avoid dragging your nymph, find the right weight for the fly that doesn’t just hit the bottom and spend more time with your rod on the water to get that “feel”
