steelhead fly tying

As I continue to build up towards the March 15 launch of the new steelhead fly tying course I wanted to to post here so this new project is open to the public.

Click here to see the introductory post in this series.

I would love to get your support for this project.

Click the link below if you would pay for a steelhead fly tying course and materials delivered to your doorstep.

This helps me validate this project before I get all the way into it.

Before I spend a bunch of time on something that nobody wants.

Can you help?

There will be 8 sections within this course that cover everything from traditional wet flies to special egg patterns.  Intruders over to buggy nymph patterns.

West and East, North and South.  This course will cover it all for fly tying.  Each section will be a new series of patterns and will include step x step instruction and the materials to tie them delivered to your doorstep.

Session 1:  History of steelhead Flies, Tools and the classic Wet Flies

  • Background on steelhead flies and their history
  • wet fly hooks
  • typical fly tying materials overview
  • fly tying techniques
  • Top 20 wet flies for steelhead
  • Step x Step fly tying instruction for 3 of the best patterns

(Fly tying materials to tie each of the patterns will be delivered to your doorstep via the Fly Tying Mentor)

In the first chapter I’ll cover the history of steelhead flies so you have a better connection of where they are coming from.  This will help you understand the foundation for what you will be tying.

I’ll also get into the tools and some general questions and answers that come up commonly and will answer any questions you have real time.

We will then go into some of the classic wet flies that have been used for many years for summer and winter steelhead.

Thanks for your support.  If I get 20 people that sign up and show support by clicking the button above I’ll build the course.

WFS 005 – Jim Teeny Interview – 60 Years of Fly Fishing, Sinking Lines, Spotting

jim teeny

The first sinking fly lines were developed by my guest, Jim Teeny, back in the 1970’s.   In Episode 005 of the Fly Fishing Show I had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Teeny who is one of the most influential people in fly fishing over the last 60 years partly due to Jim’s contribution of sinking lines for fly fisherman around the world back in the 1970’s.

We talk about sinking lines, the Teeny Nymph and a bunch of other tips and great stories about how Jim has caught so many fish species over the years on the fly he originated – the teeny nymph fly.

Jim invented the Teeny Nymph when he was a young kid and didn’t realize how affective it would be for so many species.  Now that Jim has launched a successful company and fished all over the world, we look back on where he’s been and where he’s going.

Jim has done many interviews, written lot’s of articles and books but a recent podcast is what reminded me to contact Jim.  If you want to listen to this interview that April Volkey did with Jim click here.

I couldn’t cover it all but feel pretty good and really enjoyed the hour I had to site down with Jim.

If you would rather watch the interview with Jim take a look at the link below.

Steelhead Tip of the Day – How Fast to Step Through a Steelhead Run

how to step through a run

how to step through a run

Are you wasting time swinging for steelhead by taking little baby steps and fishing too slowly through a run?

Or are you missing fish by taking too many steps and passing possible fish because you are moving to fast through the run?

Is there a perfect speed that you can fish and cover all of the water effectively in all water conditions?

I want to share a link that sheds light on this question.

Here is a link for an interview I did with Jack Mitchell who talked about covering more or less water based on the clarity of the river.

Check out this episode at the 30:15 mark to hear Jack explain how he moves through a run.

Listen here ===>>  Interview with Jack Mitchell on Stepping through a run

jack mitchell

How fast should I step through a steelhead run

  • Jack’s rule of thumb is that if there is 2 feet of visibility, then take 2-3 steps downstream between each cast.
  • If you have 3 feet of visibility, take 3-4 steps.
  • If you have 4-5 feet of visibility, take 4-5 big steps between each cast and swing.

Remember this little rule of thumb next time you are stepping through a run to increase your efficiency. Maybe you will get to swing through one more run next time you are on the river.

Click the button below to get the Steelhead Tips PDF Quick Guide from all of our guests.  I’ve basically summed up all of the best tips from the fly fishing shows and tossed it in one guide.
